SL1000 License Structure Explained (VRS + Voicemail)

There are some confusion over the number of VRS and Voicemail port access, especially on the usage of default number of ports and license usage. 

I will do a detailed explanation over here. 


First Thing we need to understand the hardware requirement for both VRS & Voicemail. In the SL1000 hardware lineup, below shows you the hardware required;
  • PZ-VM21 (serves as a holder to put in the Compact Flash CF card) - CF slot
  • Type of CF available (either of the 3 cards);
    • IP4WW-CFVRS-C1 (only have VRS functionality) = 512MB
    • IP4WW-CFVMS-C1 (both VRS & Voicemail Functionality) =512MB
    • IP4WW-CFVML-C1 (both VRS & Voicemail Functionality) =1GB
Just treat CFVMS as VM short (approx. 15 hours storage), CFVML as VM long (approx. 40 hours storage). 

Second Thing let's understand the default number of ports for both VRS/Voicemail. Please see below;
  • IP4WW-CFVRS-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS)
  • IP4WW-CFVMS-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS) + 2 ports access (VM)
  • IP4WW-CFVML-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS) + 4 ports access (VM)
Now that you understand the default number of ports. Lets discuss further on expanding the ports access.

Third Thing let's look into the ports expansion for both VRS + VM. Please see below;
  • IP4WW-CFVRS-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS)
  • IP4WW-CFVMS-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS) + 2 ports access (VM)
  • IP4WW-CFVML-C1, default 4 ports access (VRS) + 4 ports access (VM)

  • FOR VRS PORTS: To expand up to 16 ports access, simply you just need to buy the memory card IP4WW-MEMDB C1 and insert it into the CPU card. By this action you will have automatically 16 ports for VRS access. This statement applies for all the 3 CF cards
  • FOR VM PORTS: To expand both CFVMS & CFVML voicemail ports access from 2 and 4 ports respectively, you will need to purchase the following license SL-VM-CHANNEL-2 LIC. This license per quantity will give you 2 ports expansion. You can expand the voicemail port access up to a maximum of 16 ports access. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL NEED THE MEMORY CARD IP4WW-MEMDB C1 when you are expanding beyond 8 ports voicemail access

SL1000 License Structure Explained

Basically the SL1000 license structure is categorized into the following system feature grouping;

  • VoIP
    • SL-IP-SIPTRK-1 LIC (up to max. 16 IP Trunks, SIP/H.323)
    • SL-IP-SIPEXT-1 LIC (up to max. 16 IP phones, 3rd-party standard SIP phones, no license is required for NEC IP phone IP4WW-24TIXH-C-TEL)
  • VoIP (Enhanced) 
    • SL-IP-ENCRYPTION LIC (turn on feature, to encrypt the RTP packet for IP phone communications) 
    • SL-IP-NAPT LIC (turn on feature, to enable remote IP extension connecting back to SL1000 via NAPT method)
  • VM 
    • SL-VM-CHANNEL-2 LIC (max. up to 16 Voice mail ports access, * i will explained more in details as it is a little bit tricky on this part)
  • VM (Enhanced)
    • SL-VM-ADVANCE LIC (turn on feature, to have for example voice-to-email feature, meaning user can retrieve their voicemail using their email client although it is not a true unified messaging system. it simply forwards a copy of the voicemail as wav. file to the email inbox)
  • Mobile Extension 
    • SL-SYS-MOBILE-1 LIC (max. up to 32 defined users, this feature is very useful and it gives the users mobility with pbx phone features, *i will explain more in details in my next posting)
  • Hotel/Motel 
    • SL-SYS-HOTEL LIC (turn on feature, you will need to activate this license if you want to make use of the hotel/motel features in SL1000)
Having said and done, which license you think is not very useful? Personally i feel that the enhanced feature for VoIP is not very useful, encryption & NAPT.

Understanding SL1000 Deployment

I have a contact in Asia who pass me this document for me to understand the different deployment scenarios for SL1000. Inside provides valuable information on the various deployment scenarios;

  • Pure TDM (with/without licenses)
  • Pure IP (with/without licenses)
  • License Usage (VoIP/VRS/Voicemail/Mobile Extension/Advanced InMail/Hotel)


Take note that for SL1000 it does have hotel/motel features (check-in/out, room cut-off,etc) and you will require the hotel license if you need to use the feature. And also SL1000 is deployed as a standalone without connectivity to the PMS (Property Management System).
