NEC SL1000 vs NEC Aspila Topaz

Let us take a look at some of the main differences between NEC SL1000 and NEC Aspila Topaz.

First we have the support of IP phones for NEC SL1000 while NEC Aspila Topaz don't support any IP phones, only TDM phones. The only IP networking method available for both plaforms is the H.323 trunking while for the NEC SL1000 it also support SIP trunking at the same time. There has been a lot of confusion over the support of IP phones for NEC Aspila Topaz. It don't not support IP phones and that the IP capability is only in terms of IP Internetworking between 2 Topaz systems.

Second while NEC SL1000 system has a proper licensing structuring, for the NEC Aspila Topaz it does not have any licenses. One thing to note here is that for the Topaz system it does have 1 license which is for the Hotel/Motel feature activation. However the license activation is more on the commercial side, buying of license and then manual keying of the license into the Topaz system VIA PCPro.

Thirdly while there are many add -on cards for NEC Aspila Topaz, the NEC SL1000 does away with the additional cards by having dual purposes in it's hybrid extension and analog trunk ports. For example the NEC Aspila Topaz system has the 2PGDU card for the support of doorphone, while NEC SL1000 uses the hybrid 6th & 7th port for such purposes.

Fourthly previously the NEC Aspila Topaz has the following add-ons key modules for its digital phone, 24dls and 110 dss console while for the NEC SL1000 now it only has 60 keys Dss console.

5. Both NEC systems supports ISDN-2 but for the NEC SL1000 it can also support ISDN-30. Well both of them still don't support analog DID, 2/4 W E&M, QSIG. Therefore the integration option is still limited for both NEC systems especially for the Topaz system.

6. In terms of design-wise the NEC Aspila Topaz is a better build compared to NEC SL1000. At least the Topaz system has a solid metal base with a proper housing for the power supply unit (safety aspect) and the build is much more solid. While for the NEC SL1000 the entire chassis is made of plastic and it does have a bit of filmsy feel to it. And I do hope that in the next hardware revision of the NEC SL1000 the NEC design team will cover up the power supply unit instead of just leaving it as common access when the cover is removed.

7. Architecturally-wise there is also changes in the analog trunk ports. For the NEC Aspila Topaz it comes with 3 analog trunks for the main board & 308 card while for the NEC SL1000 now it has 4 analog trunks for the main board & 408 cards.
